Montréal le 31 Août 2015 – Né en 1968 à Bakou en Azerbaïdjan, Vahid Mustafa Yev fonde une station de télévision indépendante à l’âge de 23 ans, devenue depuis la chaine ANS. Il a réalisé de nombreux documentaires, notamment Qazma, Strange People Who Bring Bad News, Seventeen Moments of Autumn, Bulaghistan, et les fictions MEMORY (2010) et KHOJA (2012).

Born in Baku, Azerbaijan in 1968, Vahid Mustafa Yev founded an independent TV station at the age of 23, a station that has since evelved into the ANS, Azerbaijan’s largest network. He has worked as a frontline journalist and directed numerous documentaries. In 2006 he founded the Baki Film Studio. His feature credits include MEMORY (2010) and KHOJA (2012).

Synopsis / Synopsis

Dans la nuit du 19 au 20 janvier 1990, l’Armée soviétique a envahi Bakou et ses alentours, et tué la population civile. Au cours de cet épisode sanglant, 170 personnes ont été tuées, plus de 800 personnes blessées et plusieurs centaines arrêtées. Le film relate cette triste page de la lutte du peuple azerbaïdjanais pour son indépendance, vue à travers le regard des frères Narimanov : Najaf, communiste et officier du KGB, et Mehdi, ancien officier de l’armée soviétique, reconverti en démocrate révolutionnaire, qui, malgré leurs visions contradictoires, aspirent tous deux à un pays prospère. Azerbaijan officially declared its independence from the USSR on August 30, 1990, but it was on January 20th of that year that the republic was born in blood. It was on that day that Soviet tanks and artillery rolled into Baku killing some 170 Azeri nationalists.The historical events are seen through the eyes of the Narimanov family, in particular two brothers, KGB officer and communist Najaf, and ex-soviet army officer-turned-revolutionary Mehdi. Between the two brothers and their conflicting visions for Azerbaijan stands their mother Khadija…
